Sahra Deagle - Miss Rodeo Jasper
2012
Sahra Deagle is the 19 year old daughter of Rahel Baumann and Mark Deagle and was born and
raised in Hinton AB. Growing up near a guest ranch, it was inevitable that she would eventually begin
riding, which she did; at the age of eight. Following lessons, she joined the Chinook Riders Drill Team
which she has now been with for the past 6 years performing at many rodeos with them. Around the
same time she also joined the River Valley Riding Association and began competing in gymkhana events
and local rodeos. Just this year, Sahra has also decided to begin riding with the Rocky Mountain Riders
Drill Team. During high school she was a member of the Student Union. When she isn’t riding or out
with the horses, she enjoys being active at the gym or outside doing activities such as snowboarding,
skating, camping and hiking with family and friends.
After graduating from Harry Collinge High School in 2011, Sahra moved to Vermillion to take
Environmental Science at Lakeland College, majoring in Conservation and Reclamation. She plans on
returning this fall to obtain her diploma and then has set her sights on doing another two years of
schooling at university in order to obtain her bachelor of Environmental Science.
Sahra’s journey towards becoming Miss Rodeo Jasper started in 2008 after having been
crowned the River Valley Riding Association Queen. After waiting a few years she then gave the title of
Miss Rodeo Hinton 2011 a shot, and won it by a mere two points. Both these competitions were a
learning experience and prepared her for competing for Miss Rodeo Jasper 2012. Winning the queen
title is made even more special as she has strong family ties to the town of Jasper as well as its history
and is honoured to represent it, along with the great sport of rodeo, as she attends various events
throughout her reign.

Tayler Melin - Miss Rodeo Jasper
Princess 2012
Tayler Melin is the 19 year old daughter of Steer Wrestler Chuck Melin and Barrel Racer Jo-Lynn Melin.
Growing up a farm girl from rural Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Tayler was born into the western lifestyle.
On the weekends, and during the summer, she rodeod with her father, travelling all over Alberta and the
United States. While on the road she busied herself reading. Tayler was an avid reader from a young age,
some of her favourite memories were of the bedtime stories her and her parents would take turns reading.
Among the many they read the Harry Potter, Heartland and Nancy Drew series were favourites. From her
love of reading stemmed her love of writing. Always excelling in English Language Arts her talent grew as
she aged. Tayler now writes an occasional blog for Canadian Cowboy Country Magazine on their website.
Aspiring to be a writer she plans to attend Grant MacEwan for a Bachelor in Applied Communications
in Journalism. Tayler aspires to one day write for Canadian Cowboy Country or Western Horseman as a
regular columnist or journalist.
At the rodeos she often participated in grand entry, carrying the Canadian flag and singing the national
anthem. During the rodeo Tayler was usually found chasing stock in the arena or sorting behind the chutes.
Her father being on the rodeo committee and judging many of the rodeos Tayler was always helping in
whatever way she could. Long before her first Rodeo Royalty title Tayler had years of experience selling
50/50’s and interacting with the crowd. As she got older, Tayler began barrel racing again and competing
with her father at rodeos. Riding took the place of sports as she exercised two to three horses a night. As a
girl she was very active, a competitive gymnast spending 18 hours a week training after school. During her
recesses and lunch breaks she trained for her school track and field team. She played Soccer in Junior High
and Basketball in High school, before rodeo and barrel racing became her main focus.
In September Tayler begins her two years at the British Columbia College of Equine Therapy in Vernon,
British Columbia. She plans to remain living and working in Alberta and make the commute with other
classmates for the one weekend a month of class. In between classes Tayler looks forward to the practical
work, case studies and research projects. She feels that this knowledge will help her to maintain and
care for her horses to the best of her ability. This, she feels, will improve her horses overall health and
performance aiding in her journey as a horsewoman.
The Miss Rodeo Jasper Program dedicates itself to providing a platform for young women to grow and develop as responsible citizens in the world of professional rodeo, and as participants in a global nation. Providing opportunities to expand the depth and breadth of their contributions in and outside of rodeo remains a top priority for the organizing committee.
Each spring we invite interested young ladies to consider the Miss Rodeo Jasper Program. Contestants must be 18 years of age by August 1 and willing to participate in all program requirements. Young ladies who are interested in a fast paced and challenging program can contact us at missrodeojasper@jasperheritagerodeo.com
